Student Council Elections

High school student president elections are something that most teachers would describe as sick, a failure of democracy, or just plain immaturity. They say this because the person who gets elected is the person who gives the most candy and has the funniest speech. The winner is most definitely not the person who boasts the most experience, the best qualities, or promises to improve the community. The winner of the election is the one who passes out the most candy has the funniest speech and is most liked. It’s really quite a bit like a real presidential election. In our school only seniors can run for president and senses the ninth graders are new were there swing votes.  Unlike a real election the way to win our votes is to hand out candy. Most candy is directed towards us because they know if they give us enough candy we will vote for them.  The next` key part is the speech. What we are looking for is a funny entertaining speech. Not a five minute lecture on how this person might really help the ECA community. We want comedy and false promises of soda machines. We want over the top and ridiculous. Almost none of the tactics employed by hot shot politicians can be found in a student council election.
